Test Shots (1)

These are my favorite photos from the first test shoot which I took landscape. I think that the overall style and design of the images create a professional look which would work well in my music magazine. The models which I have used portray a realistic young indie/alternative band who produce some rock songs. I made sure they were all of a similar height and wore suitable clothes which worked well together. I think the colors and designs effectively combine well to produce an image which can easily be identified as a three band members. I will use of these as my main front cover photo.

I also took some individual self portrait shots during the shoot. These include two model members of the band which I thought would be relevant in other parts of the magazine including the contents and double page spread.

Finally I decided to take some photos of the two girl model band members so that I had a range of different combinations of photos to use when creating my music magazine.I told them to think of there relationship as sisters or best friends so that I could see a close connection in the photography.

Exclusive Interview with Lilly Fox

“Music is a world within itself; it’s a language we all understand”

At this year’s St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in Singapore we spoke to Lilly Fox about her latest music success in the indie/alternative industry, and the opportunities she has explored from day one. Hot on the topic ASY discuss his new album ‘X-R’ and how she influenced her songwriter Julie Walters when producing them.

So Lilly are you excited about tonight’s festival right here in the beautiful Singapore?
I couldn’t be any more ecstatic with the turnout of people and the fantastic mood which they were all for tonight’s performance. Opportunities like this are rare for a band like us who are from a small part of Cornwall called St.Ives.

Here at ASY we heard you haven’t been in one place for too long, why don’t you tell us about your recent visits?
Everyday has been something new; I’ve been living up the high life in Los Angeles at times, and have met many incredible people throughout my journey so far. Being a music artist is truly the most surreal experience, and every day I wake up I expect it to be a dream.

You mentioned you ‘have met many incredible people’, explain some of the highlights?
Where to begin…first of there is my band mates who are all like my best friends, they always support me when we are in practicing and we have such a laugh together. Then there is the unpredictable quirky Sam Richie my all-time favourite artist who has been my inspiration even since I was a little kid back in school. Only last week I met my new backing instrumental crew who were absolutely phenomenal, the way they combined their talents and experience together was breath taking. I feel so lucky to be able to work with such an incredible group of individuals.

Enough about other people, we heard you recently signed a new record label with Universal Music Group (UMG)
Wow, yes I was contacted by the company last Tuesday by Amy Sanders who mentioned that ‘Ross Smith’ the owner of UMG was delighted to offer me a signed record label deal with them, after a previous interview two weeks before. I have many new exciting things coming my way in the next few months, like festivals all over the USA and in the romantic city of Paris France.

Your new album ‘X-R’ is out on the 18th of February, what’s it all about?
Well we decided to focus on the individual emotions behind each song and create an album which conveyed music at its best. X-R brings you the best of all worlds, combining upbeat inspiring songs, alongside a selection of songs which I stripped back to the roots, re-introducing the best of my original UK tour.

How has your songwriter Julie Walters made been a part of this?
Julie has been a huge part of my life for the past year, allowing me to produce some amazing very professional sounds which she co-ordinated and enhanced for me. Julie has always been there for me especially when I was struggling to find motivation in the studio and successfully cheered me up when we was faced with a tough crowd.

Will you catch up with us soon and discuss how your new album goes down? Of course, I can’t wait to see if all that hard work has paid off and how our fans react to it. December is going to be blast when we hit the lights of New York and meet Daniel Jordan.

My Pitch Feedback

Overall I think that my pitch feeback has been extremely positive, with many people saying they 'love' my magazine and that my ideas are 'creative'. This has made me feel more confident about producing such a minimilistic magazine which follows the indie/alternative/rock genre. I wasn't confident that people understand my name which I produced for my magazine however this feedback reassures me that it's quirky and 'different', which works well with trhe strucure of my magazine. I have not recieved any constructive criticism which tells me that I have acheived all the aims of my pitch and have covered all areas.

In conclusion I have decided that I am going to keep the original indie design ideas and focus on minimal but effective text, a colour palette which has sharp contrasting soft colours, and a very unique fashion style.

Reflecting On My Research

Organisation and Time Management

So far I think that I have kept up the coursework demands in the schedule and have met all deadlines in advance. I also think I have understood in which order the tasks should be completed and have achieved more than enough for each section.

Research and Planning

I have learn't a lot from the research which I have done, including the type of genre and structure which my magazine will follow. I have also found inspiration from similar artists which resemble my type of style, allowing me to look at similar designs and compare the differences across the different magazine titles out there currently. The colour palette is an extremely important part of the magazine design and personally I have been influenced by the combination of Loud and Quiet's magazine covers and double page spread, as they always use the traditional black and white whilst adding a splash of sharp colour, like red or blue. I like Vibe's use of unique colour patterns which they use to catch the reader's eye line. I am going to put my own edge on my creation which will be clear though the use of added patterns and cover lines.

Technology

I have began using Photoshop which I have previously used before so I think that I am fairly confident with creating a final magazine using it. I am now able to Scribd documents and embed them onto my blog post on Blogger. I can also create videos on Stupflix and upload them to youtube easily.

My Research and Planning Work so far

Evaluation of my Research so Far

After doing my research for the past two weeks I have decide which genre I am going to choose and roughly how I am going to structure my magazine inside each page. The genre will be indie/alternative with a splash of rock in there. All three pages will be fairly simplistic and minimalistic but on contrast will have some sharp colours alongside some bold traditional colours. The cover inspired by 'DIY' & 'Loud and Quiet' music magazines will be structured with a medium sized masthead positioned on the top right hand side of cover. I will be using my selected title from previous research 'ASY' but with a few alterations. There will be one main image which covers the whole page preferably a side front looking shot, which will be on top of a smooth relaxing colour as the background. My contents page inspired by 'Q', 'DIY' and 'Loud and Quiet' will be either a list of short cover lines on the left hand side with a few images on the right hand side, or a scatter look in which the writing is formed in different shapes and sizes. I will have a small photo of my front cover on my contents page in the corner and have a large masthead which covers the whole length of the page. My double page spread inspired by 'VIBE' and 'Loud and Quiet' will be structured with one main image on the left hand side with the other side featuring one main cover line, full article and some added small text. The questions in the article will be bold to make it my targeted audience to identify the different subjects within.
